Choir

The choir at Stepney Greencoat plays an important part in the life of the school, preparing music for the Harvest, Christmas, Easter and end-of-year services, in addition to concerts and outside projects.

Lessons and rehearsals

All children have a singing lesson every week in school time and the choir is open to children in years 3 to 6 who show some musical ability and wish to progress further. This is run as an after-school club. There is a Key Stage 1 choir for children in years 1 and 2; they also rehearse weekly (during school hours) and perform at services and concerts.

Repertoire

The repertoire has included pieces by Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Greene, Britten and Rutter as well as jazz and folk songs and carols in different languages. In 2011 we were privileged to sing in front of the Queen during her visit to St. Katherine’s Foundation and we also made a CD of Christmas music.

We have often taken part in Prom Praise for Schools at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the massed choir.

Allen and Overy

The school has a close relationship with our business partners, Allen & Overy and the choir has taken part in many exciting projects organized by them, including The Magic Flute at Glyndebourne in 2010, Carmina Burana at the Temple Church (also 2010) and Carmen at Sadler’s Wells in 2011. This was followed by a Gala Concert at Sadler’s Wells in 2012. We are now working on Oklahoma!, to be performed at Opera Holland Park in May 2013.
